Getting a visa for a long stay in Italy, and a Permesso di Soggiorno

My brother and his family are living in Sydney… That is a very useful post for travelers!

Bagni di Lucca and Beyond

Australians are allowed to stay in Italy ( and other countries that are part of the Schengen agreement) for up to 90 days without having to apply for a visa. It is possible to stay in the Schengen countries for 90 days in 180.  Check with your travel agent, or even better The Department of Foreign Affairs, before you travel.

If you plan to stay in Italy for more than 90 days you will need a visa.  There is a Consulate in Brisbane, which is where I went.  Here are some suggestions to perhaps make this excercise not too traumatic.  Please note that this not official advice – just my experience.

1.  Obtain an application form from the Italian Consulate.  The form can be downloaded on the internet at no cost.

2.  You will need originals and photocopies of  –

A.   Return ticket

B.  An address you will be staying…

Parma: the “Ville en rose”

  • PARMA – Northern of Italy

If you are in northern Italy, one hour from Milan, you will find the city of Parma, the “Ville en rose”, famous for its Prosciutto and Parmesan cheese, known all over the world!

BUT, it is not only the culinary specialties that attract so many visitors! Parma is rich in history, the Duomo, the Churches, the Baptistery, the very famous Teatro Regio which hosts fantastic programs of classical music every season.

Parma "the ville en rose"

Visiting these churches will make you discover beautiful paintings and statues, decorated floors and ancient organs…

Frequent are the references in Parma to his Napoleonic past and to the Imperial Princess and Archduchess of Austria Maria Luigia …

Then, a nice quiet walk, through the streets and alleys of a small town that moves by bike, among well-kept shops and lovely restaurants.

In short, find out about the concerts and plan to stop in Parma at least one night …. it is an elegant but “young city”, full of Italian and foreign university students

Not to be missed!

One day of Thermal Spa in Sirmione

In Italy we have a great tradition in Thermae: warm water that flow from the depths of the earth, rich in minerals.

There are many thermal spa sites in almost all regions.

Today I want to write about SIRMIONE: delightful village close to the Lake Garda, very suggestive, about thirty minutes from Milan.

Aquaria is the  “Thermal spa on the lake”. Outdoor pools of thermal water at 33/37° C, relaxation areas and whirlpools overlooking the lake.

Schermata 2018-10-08 alle 18.20.50

Wonderful at night.

You can spend a relaxing day, cuddling you and visiting in Sirmione village, for example, the Scaligero Castle ( mid-thirteenth century) admiring the fabulous view of the lake from above,

or going to the Grotte of Catullo ( first century B.C) walking through a beautiful archaeological site.

Here you’ll find all the info about prices and more…

Do no miss it!

See you.

Shopping in Italy: the Fidenza Village Outlet

Are you in the Nord of Italy?

Just an hour from Milan, easily reachable by shuttle (all the info at the bottom of the post), among the many outlets in Italy, I would like to point out this gem: the Fidenza Village Outlet.

It is not the usual shopping center, but a very nice “village”, very accurate in details.

I recommend it if you want to do a full immersion in the most prestigious fashion brands (Prada, Belstaff, Peuterey, Sergio Rossi, Dolce & Gabbana, Jimmy Choo, La Perla and so much more) and spend a relaxing day

away from the traffic of the city center, maybe after a cappuccino with the background of the chirping of birds!

Fashion contests and theme nights are also organized, the look of the outlet is continually renewed with exhibitions and lounges among flower pots.

Shopping becomes a pleasure, especially if you pamper yourself with some delight of the Emilian cuisine offered in one of the many delicious little restaurants and bars

Piazza di Spagna

Here is THE square par excellence: Piazza di Spagna.

In your trip to Rome … you will definitely pass here.

You will walk in the crowd (always) and venture on the famous steps …

Not everyone knows that for designing the fountain in the center of the square, called “Barcaccia“, Bernini was inspired by an old boat beached during the overflowing of the river Tiber in the 15th century.

If you are romantic, do not miss a carriage ride on the characteristic “Botticella“, through the ancient streets of Rome!

But, if you are a little hungry, I recommend a stop for a quick lunch by GINA, right at the top of the climb Via San Sebastianello (on the left, facing the stairs) …

Or, even if it is not “Italian style”, a delicious stop by Babington’s, not only tea rooms… a real treat!

See you!

Today, a beautiful cold sunny day ….
a nice walk will open your heart …

Right on the promenade leading from the “Palazzaccio”, the Palace of Justice in Rome, to the Basilica of St. Peter.

It ‘a pedestrian area, very pleasant, overlooking the Tiber and the statues of the “Angels” of the Bridge Sant’Angelo, will accompany you in front of the entrance to Castel S. Angelo.

The Castle S. Angelo in Rome is home to the National Museum, Archaeological site, fortress and prison, but also a Papal residence, rich in artistic episodes of great importance.

I suggest, indeed, a visit …

Opening :
From Tuesday to Sunday – 9.00 – 19.30

Piazza Navona: THE square

Piazza Navona, the symbol of Baroque Rome, is one of the most famous squares of Rome.

Its shape is that of an ancient stadium, when usually the square was flooded in August to relieve the heat.
In ancient times the square was concave, the three fountains were clogged so the water came out to flood the square and offer refreshment to the people.

Surely you will passing through Piazza Navona, visiting Rome …

At number 71, a romantic door for an unexpected surprise, The Home Suite Rome, a Luxury Relais with suitable prices to the breathtaking view…

Don’t forget to look  up….

…and all around you.

“Putting on the same line of sight, the heart, the mind and the eye.”

“Putting on the same line of sight, the heart, the mind and the eye.”

This was the thought of Henri Cartier Bresson, the great photographer of the moment and eternity!

This exhibition is a journey between his art and the memories of his best friends, the thoughts of other great artists, historians, photographers and intellectuals who knew him

The exhibition is titled in fact, Images and Words, and  narrative voices will accompany you as a guide.

The artist who knew how to make a seemingly insignificant moment, a masterpiece…

I love the black and white, even if it seems easier, not at all.

Here are his ten lessons for “photos from the road”:

– Focusing on the geometry
– Be patient
– travel
– Be faithful to a single goal
– Photographing children
– Not be intrusive
– Look at the world as a painter
– Do not cut photos
– Not develop the photos yourself
– Think of the next photograph.

Cartier Bresson was not jealous of his pictures, like all geniuses, he was generous…

McCurry’s superb photographic homage to Italy

Steve McCurry's "Afghan Girl"

Here is another historic area of RomeTestaccio.
The Testaccio, is located south of the Aventino hill, another essential goal, and is very characteristic, having retained its popular spirit, almost a village within the city!

The Testaccio perches on a mountain of “pieces” of broken amphorae, some 25 million amphorae, dating back to 140 AD!

Right here, at MACROMuseum of Contemporary Art Rome can not miss the exhibition of Steve McCurry, one of the greatest masters of photography of our century.

The exhibition is a journey into the human being, who, in spite of the different customs, traditions, history, has, in every continent, always the same needs, fears and emotions!
